TOLDO: "BAGGIO IN THE NATIONAL TEAM? HE'S A GREAT PLAYER, BUT ONLY THE COACH DECIDES."

APPIANO GENTILE - Francesco Toldo press conference (2).

Baggio in the national team. Some people have put forward the theory that there are several players who don't want him. What's your opinion?
Personally, there's nothing. On the contrary, a person like Baggio and a player like Baggio can do only good in the changing room. He brings joy and happiness because he's a splendid person. But only the coach can explain certain choices. The rest is gossip.

But do you want him in the national team?
For me, he's a great player, but there are other players in his position. These are choices for Trapattoni. Fortunately for me, I'm the Inter keeper and I just think about doing my job. And I avoid creating controversies.

What about Camoranesi? Argentines and Italians seem to be divided as regards this possibility...
There's something new every day. I see the national team as the identity of a country. To open the frontiers to a foreigner is a delicate matter. I'm for tradition. I always link Italian personalities to Italy. But if Camoranesi joins, then that's fine. I think Italian fans have to identify themselves with their national team.

In this sense, Baggio not being selected is all the more paradoxical - he has done a lot for Italy...
Yes, but Camoranesi and Baggio have different positions. We need to see Trapattoni's ideas, I can't anticipate other people's ideas. I just have one thing to say - the national team to the Italians. Then, if someone else comes, that's fine...

What do you think about Baggio's call-up as a sort of career award?
An award? And then? Leave him at home? You go into the national team because you merit it, not as an award. I think Baggio being in the national team would make everyone happy. But these aren't problems of ours.
