MILAN - Football and books. In an interview with Radio Montecarlo, Walter Mazzarri discussed his first biography "Il meglio deve ancora venire" [The best is yet to come], co-written with Alessandro Alciato, as well as the two most recent victories against Sassuolo and Fiorentina, which Mazzarri can perhaps interpret as a positive sign:
"I’m feeling good, and as anyone who knows me can tell you, I’m always happy when my team wins. Beyond the points we earned in these last two matches, I think the important thing was to see the team playing as they did until just a few weeks ago. That’s something that matters. What could be the best that’s still to come? Regarding my career, and even if I’ve been doing this job for more than twelve years, the book’s title means that I still don’t feel satisfied. That I still want to do more. I want to show everyone that I’m even more motivated than before and aiming as high as possible."
Mazzarri experienced unforgettable moments with Sampdoria and Napoli. So why did he decide to make a break with such success? "It comes back to the same discussion on what stimulates you. When you’re on a stage you need to see that you have support. Then you have to reason with yourself and make your choices, if you’re in the right condition to do so. However, I’ve always been pleased with mine. Did I choose the title when I knew I was coming to Inter? There were a lot of possibilities. I think I put a lot of myself into what I do, to quote Ligabue. My character and what I have inside me."
In an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica you were described as a coach who builds things and then disassembles them on your own: "I believe the journalist who interviewed me did a good job understanding my character, but that’s also where my growth comes from. I don’t need any external stimulus because I can find it on my own. That’s the type of personality I have, and I’m always able to battle against myself."
Regarding Inter’s change of ownership and the possibility of greater responsibility being placed on his shoulders: "At Napoli as well I was used to managing the team with small group of people, also because the players have confidence in me. I don’t think Thohir being far away is a major problem because he’s always stepped in whenever his intervention has been called for. Of course I’d like to be able to speak with him in person on a daily basis, but once you’ve set up common guidelines it’s not a problem if you don’t see each other every day. There are more important things to concern yourself with."
