BATISTUTA: "I'VE BEEN CLOSE TO AN INTER MOVE MANY TIMES, BUT NOW I'M HERE I'LL SHOW IT'S NOT LATE."

MILAN - Inter vice president Giacinto Facchetti officially presented Gabriel Omar Batistuta to the press at noon today.

Before handing over to the Argentine striker, Facchetti said, "After Crespo's injury against Modena we had the necessity of finding a worthy replacement, and the choice was Batistuta. You have seen the enthusiasm with which the people have acclaimed him. The president has shown great enthusiasm in calling him and Cuper has also given a very positive reply. Batistuta's enthusiasm has also been shown by the fact that he has accepted to come to Inter for less than he earned at Roma."

Batistuta commented, "I could easily have stayed at Roma, but there were two reasons that pushed me to come to Inter - on that pitch [at the Olimpico] I was no longer accepted by the fans, but this wasn't fundamental, because if any other side apart from Inter had put in an offer I would have stayed at Roma. I had other offers but I didn't accept them. Then Inter and president Moratti's proposal arrived, and there was the concrete possibility of coming to Inter and winning the Scudetto with an Inter shirt. Inter are fighters, they are a serious club and they have shown they can fight for the Scudetto. My affection for president Moratti was determining. I've been close to an Inter move many times, but now I'm here I will show it's not late."
