ICC 2019: INTER 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

The Nerazzurri fall to defeat in their ICC opener: Greenwood's goal decides the match in Singapore as Barella makes his debut

SINGAPORE – In their opening 2019 International Champions Cup fixture, Antonio Conte’s Inter were defeated by Solskjær’s Manchester United side at a sold-out National Stadium in Singapore.

After an initial opening period where both sides looked to figure each other out, Manchester United began to make inroads towards the Inter box, although the Nerazzurri did win the first corner of the match as Dalbert’s low ball towards Longo was put out of play. A minute later, D’Ambrosio managed to get to the ball ahead of Rashford as United looked to counter.

It was a positive opening period for Esposito, who took on Tuanzebe in the 21st minute and earned a free kick for Inter in a dangerous position just outside United’s box. A few minutes later, Samir Handanovic was alert as Martial looked to fire Solskjær’s side ahead. As the half was coming to a close, Danilo D’Ambrosio couldn’t quite direct a header on target following Brozovic’s cross, with the same thing happening just moments later after Sensi whipped in a corner.

The second period kicked off with Conte having brought on Perisic for Longo. Early on in the half, D’Ambrosio was in the midst of the action as he cleared Lingard’s shot off the line before seeing his goal-bound header hacked clear by Wan-Bissaka. Inter started to grow into the game more as De Vrij and Gagliardini had efforts blocked shortly after the hour mark. With 68 minutes on the clock, Handanovic had to be on hand to deny Young. In the 73rd minute, Barella came on to make his Inter debut. Two minutes later, however, Manchester United took the lead: Handanovic managed to palm away Young’s free kick but the ball fell to Greenwood, who fired home with his left foot. Conte made further changes after 83 minutes, sending on Agoume, Borja Valero and Colidio. The Nerazzurri tried hard to snatch an equaliser late on but it was United who ultimately emerged victorious. The goal that Inter conceded doesn’t change the fact that this was a decent performance from the Nerazzurri, who will take to the pitch again on Wednesday 24 July against Juventus.
