Mazzarri begins season against Genoa... last time Livorno got promoted
Walter Mazzarri will be hoping for more of the same when he starts the new league season against Genoa today. The last time he faced the Rossoblu on the opening day – 11 September 2003 – his Livorno charges secured a 1-0 away win at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. A good start to 2003/04 in Serie B and an even better end: nine months later Livorno returned to the top flight after a 55-year absence. Genoa should also have been Mazzarri's first opponents in 2011/12, but a players' strike meant the first round of Serie A fixtures was rescheduled, with Napoli v Genoa (6-1) being played on 21 December 2011.
Cambiasso hits the 400 mark with Inter
Esteban Cambiasso is set to play his 400th match in Italian football with Inter. Since making his Nerazzurri debut on 11 August 2004 in a Champions League qualifier away to Basel (1-1), the Argentine has notched up 283 appearances in Serie A, 28 in the Coppa Italia, 79 in European competitions and 9 in other tournaments.
Serie A: Inter winless in five
Inter failed to win any of their last five league matches in 2012/13: one draw and four defeats. The Nerazzurri's last Serie A victory was on 21 April, 1-0 over Parma in San Siro.
Second Week 1 meeting for Inter and Genoa after 40-year hiatus
Inter are hosting Genoa on the opening day for only the second time in history today. The last time this fixture took place in Week 1, on 7 October 1973, a goalless draw was played out in San Siro. At the end of that season Genoa were relegated to Serie B.
Genoa hoping to overcome Inter for first time since 1994
Genoa have not beaten Inter home or away in a competitive fixture since 6 November 1994, when goals by Schip (14) and Ruotolo (65) sealed a narrow home win after Delvecchio had temporarily levelled (44). Since then their record in competitive matches against Inter has been 5 draws and 11 defeats.
Eight-game unbeaten run for Genoa
Genoa have not tasted defeat in eight matches since they went down 2-0 at Napoli on 7 April. Two wins and six draws is their record since then.
0-0, 0-0, 0-0: Genoa, no goals scored or conceded in three games
The Rossoblu ended the 2012/13 campaign with a trio of goalless draws: 0-0 away to Torino and at home to Inter and Bologna. Their 4-1 triumph over Pescara at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on 5 May was the last time they saw goals go in at either end: Sculli scored for Pescara in the 35th minute (making it 325 minutes without conceding for Genoa) while Borriello netted goal number four in the 75th (285 minutes without scoring).
First match-up between Mazzarri and Liverani
