NEW JERSEY – Here on inter.it you can read what Walter Mazzarri had to say as Inter prepare for their second Guinness International Champions Cup match against Valencia at the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, tomorrow at 16:00 local time (22:00 CET).
You play Valencia tomorrow, the second of three games in five days. How are you managing your players and resources?
"I haven't decided which team to pick yet but I'll probably change four or five players. We'll see."
What did you learn from the Chelsea match?
"I had a meeting with the lads earlier to show them – apart from some of the mistakes we made and must try not to repeat – the good things we did, the football we managed to play against a top-notch side. The lads have a greater awareness of what we're doing now and for a coach that's very reassuring to see. I showed them that we played some decent football, that we created four or five chances. It's all looking very good. Analysing things calmly I can say that having coached this team for a very short period I've already seen things that go way beyond even the best hopes I had."
Hugo Campagnaro won't be available against Valencia. After the game, José Mourinho said that red cards are of no benefit in friendlies because you use these matches to test things out, so it would be better to substitute that player with another and carry on 11 against 11.
"Just as I thought having a timeout [midway through each half against Hamburg] was a good idea, so too I think this is a good idea. The coaches are there, if we see a player is worked up and might get sent off, the ref could signal to us and we'd take him off. They could give us the time to substitute him. I didn't have time, but that's also because Hugo was playing very well and then he just came in with a heavy challenge. We could have decided to do things differently if the ref had spoken to us. This is the stage of the season when you're trying to get your team ready. As we've already said, the result doesn't matter at the moment. What does matter is being able to practise things we want to try out playing 11 against 11."
Unlike Hamburg and Chelsea, who were both further ahead with their pre-season preparations, Valencia's schedule is very similar to Inter's.
"Valencia are difficult to play against because Spanish teams don't give you any reference points and Valencia are a very well-drilled side. It's going to be an important test for when we go into games needing to be properly prepared, when there are points to be won. So it's a useful opportunity for us to correct some of the defects we might still be showing."
