TORINO – After Inter’s Week 1 match, coach Walter Mazzarri spoke to Sky Sport Italia. "It was a difficult and balanced match. It’s never easy when you’re playing at Torino. They wait for you and you can’t find space. We had some chances and didn’t capitalise on them. We tried until the end to win," he stated.
"I always expect the best. And then there are many things to assess. Medel has just arrived and played an excellent game, and we played in the Europa League. Torino have an excellent team and it was a balanced game."
When asked about Osvaldo the Tuscan coach responded: "We managed to get him back at the last moment. I asked him to grin and bear it for a half hour. We wanted to really push up our flank players. Had I had Osvaldo at his best I would have liked to see him and Icardi as starters.
"It’s difficult for any team that comes here to face Torino. We could have scored a goal, and so far we’ve also done well when attacking. Let’s not forget that we’re missing Palacio, and Osvaldo is only at 40 to 50 per cent. But yes, I’m very happy."
Finally, on Vidic: "He hasn’t said anything in particular. He had suffered a foul and was sent off."
The coach then added to Inter Channel: "I know how Ventura’s teams play, and they defend well. Then their fans were behind them and it wasn’t easy to find space. So things weren’t easy for us. We had to make some choices that were almost obligatory, and Osvaldo didn’t have 90 minutes in him. I had to call up Bonazzoli, who wasn’t exactly a sure thing himself. Medel? He played very well, better than I expected. Torino approached the game with a certain attitude, and it wouldn’t have been easy for any opponent.
"The boys are improving. We weren’t able to employ the kind of lively football I like. Palacio? He still has to come back and we could have had more of a presence up front with him. We could have played our game. The penalty? Fortunately Handanovic saved it, but if you give that one then you have to give one for the foul on Icardi as well. You need consistency in these judgements. But we’ll end things here."
