MAZZARRI: "DO AWAY WITH THE SPECTRE OF THE PAST"

Nerazzurri coach's press conference: "It should be the other teams worrying about us: we must attack but not be exposed. We must play our game"

APPIANO GENTILE - "It should be a case of the other sides worrying about us: we need to attack, whilst ensuring we don't leave space behind, but we have to play our game." This is what Walter Mazzarri had to say in his press conference on the eve of Catania v Inter.

"We had to figure out what this team needed, which I think was to leave the past behind. The players need to feel able to attack, whilst avoiding leaving gaps at the back. This side needed to feel it could play its own game, and I hope that our progress continues tomorrow in what is a tough place to go. A coach needs to put across his ideas as quickly as possible, and our team has already shown a great deal. After we scored the first goal against Genoa, we saw lively football, with players making the right runs at the right times, the moves we've worked on that I want to see in action.

"We saw this when the lads were able to relax a little after the opening goal. That's what I meant when I said we need to "do away with the spectre of the past", to not be afraid of attacking whilst taking care not to leave ourselves exposed in behind. A coach's aim is to improve his players, and I'm pleased with what the lads are doing.

"And you can see from our mental and tactical approach that the team is an attacking one," stressed the coach, before dodging a question on possible arrivals and departures: "I don't talk about the transfer market."
