THE KRAKOW SPRING

In a flowery and usually mild Poland, a new Inter Campus centre is in place for the children at the Specjalny Osrodek Skzolno special school

Krakow - There’s always a warm welcome in Poland and upon our second visit, our local contact Olek did everything to make us feel at home. Accompanying us on every stage of the visit, inviting us to initiatives at the Jadwiga sports club like the mass in Sant’Edwige parish while telling us about but above all, showing us how the new project has developed since the first bases were set up in October.

Along with the Seborowice Orphanage which takes in children who are taken from their families by the children’s court and the one in the historically Jewish area of Kazimierz, Inter Campus has been working with a special school. Here, the young coach Iza has joined a historic group of Polish coaches to train children with intellectual disabilities and issues with motor control. From the small pitch to the special school which welcomes children with various psychomotor skill problems and brings them all together into a protected environment where lots of diverse activities are on offer so that the children can show the best of themselves. Here, they run and are led by Andrea and Fabio as they play with the ball. They’re split into teams where they encourage one another and enjoy themselves. This is the impression that you get just from watching on by the sides. Even if inclusion with non-disabled students in Polish schools is not expected to take place in the near future, to see so much energy and desire to play creates a special kind of cheer.
