VECCHI: "TOO MANY MISTAKES"

Following the first leg semi-final defeat against Roma in the Primavera Coppa Italia, the Inter boss said his side gave too much to their opponents

ROMA – Stefano Vecchi struggled to hide his disappointment after his Inter Under-19 side were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of their Primavera TIM Cup tie with Roma.

"We made too many mistakes, where we perhaps got a little ahead of ourselves, and we gave away the ball too much," the coach told Sportitalia after the game.

"We need a good dose of humility. Losing just 1-0 isn’t so bad in the end; we had one or two chances to score, but we gave too much to the opposition.

"You can’t play like that against a team like Roma. We started okay, but after the first mistake our confidence took a hit. We didn’t quite have the character to react and we went a bit missing out there.

"We went for it more in the second half and our play improved. But we still gifted them one or two openings. As we often do, we managed to avoid damage, but we need to take preventative action to avoid getting into those kinds of situations."

From Sunday the Nerazzurri youngsters will prepare for their first league meeting of 2017, and Vecchi called on his side to focus on the next game.

"Now we look to Genoa. We hope to get started in the way we ended 2016. We want to stay top of the pile; we’ll study this game well, because we don’t want to make some of the same mistakes again."
