MILAN – In this week's Throwback Thursday we remember our first Italian Super Cup triumph in 1989.
Giovanni Trapattoni's reigning Serie A champions Inter hosted Vujadin Boskov's Coppa Italia winners Sampdoria on 29 November 1989 in the second edition of the competition, set up the year before.
Enrico Cucchi opened the scoring in the 37th minute when he played a one-two with Aldo Serena before curling his finish beyond Gianluca Pagliuca's outstretched arms.
Samp came into the game in the second half and Inter found themselves holding on. But then, with four minutes left on the clock, Andreas Brehme and Dario Morello combined well on the wing and Serena stabbed home from close range to seal a 2-0 victory.
Success for Inter and a first Italian Super Cup in the trophy cabinet.
