BOLINGBROKE AND ZANETTI SPEAK AT INTER NIGHT

CEO and vice president open proceedings at San Siro - an event reserved exclusively for season-ticket holders

MILAN - Michael Bolingbroke and Javier Zanetti hailed the importance of the San Siro faithful at the second edition of Inter Night on Wednesday evening.

The exclusive event open only to season-ticket holders was run for the second time, following last year's inaugural edition.

Chief executive officer Michael Bolingbroke opened proceedings.

"For the second year running I have the pleasure of playing host and welcoming you to Inter Night,” he began.

"But first of all I'd like to take a moment to spare a thought for all the people affected by the earthquake that struck central Italy last night.

"This stadium has an incredible history, much like our club. We have that thanks to people like you. You, our season-ticket holders, are the soul of this club and that's why today is an exclusive event just for you.

“A while back I said that I wanted San Siro to be our fortress and last season San Siro enjoyed the highest attendances in Serie A by a long shot. Inter were the only Italian club to feature in the top 20 stadium attendances in Europe. Our thanks go to you for your passion and your support.

"Of course we'd have liked to finish even higher than we did last season but we're back in Europe.

"The summer has seen a number of changes. First of all, the club has new owners in the shape of Suning, a solid company that will enable us to make the sort of investment that is so crucial in football nowadays.

“We've also signed a number of new players who will help us to improve further. They will be here soon.

“And of course we've changed coach. Roberto Mancini was important to get us where we are and now Frank will help us take another step forward towards our objective, which is to get back in the Champions League.

“I ask you to be strong. We must be strong because we lost in Verona last Sunday, but it was the first of 38 games. We must be strong enough to pick ourselves up and fight for the Scudetto. I hope you all enjoy the evening. Thanks for your continued support."

Vice president Javier Zanetti then took the floor and, unsurprisingly, was given a standing ovation by the fans.

"I really do love you guys," he said. "When I first joined Inter you made me feel at home immediately and I'll never forget that. It's an honour to be part of this great family. You are unique.

"Lots of things have changed over the years but your love never changes. Our DNA is special and we must keep loving this shirt. You guys are the most precious thing we have. You're always there for us, win, lose or draw. Your passion is so important for the lads.

"We must get back to challenging at the top and there's every reason to believe we'll do that. Let's support the team together, patiently and confidently. It will be much easier with you behind us."
