MILAN – It’s Derby d’Italia day once again. With Juventus and Inter ready to resume hostilities tonight in the Sunday evening kick-off, ourselves and Opta have figured out the perfect way to make the starting whistle come around that little bit quicker: it’s our Juventus v Inter stat pack!
HEAD TO HEAD
Sunday will see the 166th Derby d’Italia in Serie A. As things stand, Juventus have the better of the record with 78 wins, 42 draws and 45 defeats.
The Bianconeri are unbeaten in six league games against Inter, winning three and drawing three.
There have been 17 0-0 draws between Juventus and Inter in Serie A, including the home fixture earlier this season.
The most common result between Juventus and the Nerazzurri in Serie A is a 1-0 win for the Bianconeri. It’s come up 20 times, most recently in February 2011 in Turin.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS AT JUVENTUS
Inter were the first team to record a league win over the Bianconeri at Juventus Stadium (the 3-1 victory in November 2012). Only two other sides have managed the feat. In total, however, Inter have won just 11 of the 82 previous Serie A meetings between the two sides in Turin (15 draws, 56 defeats).
Juventus have scored in their last nine home league matches against Inter.
The Bianconeri have opened the scoring inside the 15-minute mark in each of their last three home matches against Inter in Serie A.
FORM BOOK
Juventus are unbeaten in 16 league games. Their 15-match winning streak was brought to an end with the 0-0 draw against Bologna last time out.
The Bianconeri have kept clean sheets in each of their last seven league matches. The last time they went eight league games without conceding was back in December 2013. Juventus’ absolute record is nine in a row, which they set in the 1972/73 season.
Juventus have failed to score just once in 62 home league games since December 2012. The anomaly was the 1-0 home defeat by Udinese at the start of this season.
Roberto Mancini’s go into Sunday’s match on the back of the 3-1 win over Sampdoria, but the Nerazzurri haven’t managed consecutive league wins in 2016.
Inter haven’t won on the road since the 1-0 win at Empoli on 6 January. Since then, they’ve drawn two and lost two, conceding in each of those four games.
GENERAL STATS
This edition of the Derby d’Italia pits the best defence in the league (Juventus, 15 goals conceded) against the third best (Inter, 23 goals conceded). Napoli have the second-stingiest backline with 21 goals conceded.
The Bianconeri have tried a total of 332 shots so far, a stat second only to Napoli’s 348.
In the nine league games they’ve contested so far in 2016, Juventus have allowed just six shots on target from inside their penalty box.
Inter have received at least four shots on goal in 16 matches this Serie A season (only four sides have a worse record). It’s only happened to Juventus on four occasions, most recently against Empoli in November.
Juventus have conceded just two headed goals this season, a record they share with AC Milan.
It took Inter longer than any other team in the league to have a goal scored by an Italian this season. Danilo D’Ambrosio’s strike against Sampdoria was the first time an Italian had scored for Inter since Andrea Ranocchia’s goal against Chievo in December 2014.
Juventus have dropped fewer points from winning positions than any other Serie A team (2). Conversely, the Nerazzurri are the side that have gained the fewest points from losing positions, alongside Frosinone (3).
The Bianconeri have given away just one penalty in the league this season. Only Fiorentina – with none – have a better record.
PLAYERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
In the five biggest European leagues, only Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid (16) has secured more clean sheets this season than Gianluigi Buffon (14, level with Kevin Trapp of PSG). Samir Handanovic and Manuel Neuer come next on 13.
Gianluigi Buffon has not conceded a goal in 656 minutes of football. Keeping a clean sheet against Inter on Sunday night would see him break his previous longest run without conceding a goal of 745 minutes, which he set in 2013. That said, the Bianconeri goalkeeper has conceded a total of 36 Serie A goals against Inter, with only Roma (37) putting more past him.
Mauro Icardi has scored six in six against Juventus in Serie A, making the Bianconeri his preferred victim. This season’s visit of Juventus to San Siro was the only time the Argentine striker has failed to score against the side from Turin. In his last league match, Icardi scored with just his second touch inside the penalty box: over the course of the season he’s had 100 touches in the area, scoring 11 goals (for an average of one goal every nine touches in the box).
Eder has scored 12 Serie A goals this season, but hasn’t yet found the net in any of his first five games for the Nerazzurri. It’s his longest dry patch in Serie A since October 2014.
The Italian international has scored two goals in nine league games against the Bianconeri, for Brescia and Sampdoria respectively. He’s without a goal against Juventus in four matches.
Rodrigo Palacio has had a hand in three goals in his last four games for the Nerazzurri (one goal, one assist). He’s not scored against Juventus since the 2012/13 season, when he scored in both league games.
Stevan Jovetic made his Serie A debut in Fiorentina’s 1-1 draw with Juventus in August 2008. Felipe Melo also made his debut in that game, but got sent off in the 83rd minute.
Paulo Dybala has been involved in 46% of Juventus’ league goals this season (21 out of 46). Dybala – who is second in the Serie A scoring table on 13 goals – is only third in the assists charts (8), behind Riccardo Saponara (9) and Lorenzo Insigne (10). The Argentine failed to score in either of the Bianconeri’s last two matches, against both Napoli and Bologna, but he hasn’t gone three league games without a goal since his arrival at Juventus. Of the teams Dybala has faced at least four times in Serie A, Inter are one of three teams (alongside Juventus and Napoli) the striker has failed to score against.
Only Gonzalo Higuain (108) and Lorenzo Insigne (76) have had more shots than Paul Pogba (74) this season. The French midfielder is also the league’s second best player in terms of successful dribbles past opponents (71), with Franco Vazquez in first position on 84.
Claudio Marchisio has scored three goals in 12 Serie A matches against the Nerazzurri. In fact, his last league goal came against Inter back in May. Marchisio hasn’t scored more than three goals against any side.
Giorgio Chiellini’s last league goal also came against the Nerazzurri, in February 2014. Since then he’s gone 60 league games without a goal.
Hernanes was an Inter player between February 2014 and August 2015, scoring seven goals in 42 league appearances for the club. Il Profeta, who didn’t face his old side in the match earlier in the season, has scored in every match he’s played against a former club. He bagged three goals in two games for the Nerazzurri against Lazio.
Leonardo Bonucci came up through the Inter youth system and made his Serie A debut for the club against Cagliari in May 2006.
IN THE DUGOUT
Massimiliano Allegri has never lost to Roberto Mancini. They’ve gone toe to toe in Serie A three times over the last two seasons: there have been two draws and one Allegri win.
Sunday will be Allegri’s 15th Serie A match against Inter. As things stand, the Juventus boss’ record reads four wins, four draws and six defeats.
Two of the three wins Mancini has managed in 15 Serie A games against Juventus have come in Turin – one each in charge of Inter and Lazio. A further six draws and six defeats complete the Nerazzurri coach’s record.
REFEREE AND DISCIPLINE
After Napoli (322), Inter have committed the fewest fouls in Serie A this season (346). Nonetheless, the Nerazzurri have picked up 72 bookings (one for every 4.81 fouls committed). Only Empoli have a worse bookings-per-foul ratio (one every 4.77).
Gianluca Rocchi has taken charge of 192 Serie A matches, including 12 this season. So far in 2015/16 Rocchi has presided over four home wins, four away wins and four draws. Rocchi has also penalised the most fouls this season with 396 – an average of 33 per game.
The Tuscan official has officiated Juventus 26 times in Serie A, with the Bianconeri winning 21, drawing none and losing three.
Rocchi has presided over 24 league games involving Inter, with these matches producing 11 Nerazzurri wins, nine draws and four defeats.
Only Lazio (9) have been shown more red cards by Rocchi than Inter (8) in Serie A over the years.
