To face this Genoa side, guided by ex-Nerazzurri coach Gasperini, Milito returned as a starter, alongside Palacio and Alvarez in attack. Jonathan, Kuzmanovic, Cambiasso and Nagatomo lined up in midfield. And Campagnaro, Rolando and Juan Jesus formed a 3-man defence in front of Handanovic in goal.
After 10 minutes a solid chance fell to Inter but Perin did well to keep out Jonathan’s fierce shot. The Nerazzurri continued to push and once again it was the Brazilian full-back who threatened to score. However, after just 20 minutes Alvarez was forced to leave the pitch after taking a knock to his knee. Palacio pounced on a poor back-pass from Cofie before sending his shot inches wide of the far post.
Both sides were struggling with the playing surface, which was rendered almost unplayable due to the heavy and continuous rain. In the 39th minute the Rossoblù had their first clear chance when Marchese’s header tested Handanovic from a corner. After a minute of injury time the first half ended at 0-0.
Just moments into the second half Kovacic picked out Palacio with a great ball, but the Argentine struggled to get his shot on target in the waterlogged box. The action switched to the other end when Gilardino gave the Nerazzurri defence a scare. On 64 minutes Fetfatzidis provided fireworks for the home fans with his two chances, then at the opposite end of the pitch Perin parried Guarin’s powerful blast, with Milito failing to put away the rebound. There were more sparks from Fetfatzidis before a controversial moment when Cofie handled the ball in the box. Just a few minutes later the Ghanaian got away with a tug on Milito.
Then in the 81st minute El Principe fed his compatriot Palacio, whose deflected shot was saved by Perin. One minute later Gilardino chested down a pass in the box, only to see his shot saved when Juan Jesus decisively slid in to block it. On 83 minutes, however, Antonelli connected with a header from a corner to put the hosts ahead. Inter continued to battle and Botta nearly equalised when his header from Palacio’s cross was palmed away by Perin. But at the final whistle the hosts were the ones to claim the three points.
