BOLOGNA – It was Inter’s first competitive match with Erick Thohir as president, but unfortunately the team will head back to Milan with just one point. Bologna v Inter finished 1-1, and it was a missed opportunity for the Nerazzurri to reach third place.
In front of Handanovic in goal, Mazzarri fielded a newly returned Campagnaro in the defence, alongside Rolando and Juan Jesus. In midfield, Jonathan and Nagatomo worked the flanks, with Taider, Cambiasso and Alvarez in the middle, and Palacio supported Guarin in attack.
Bologna needed just 12 minutes to take the lead. Cristaldo took off down the right and sent a low cross to Kone who struck to make it 1-0. Inter immediately attempted to respond through Palacio, only to see him denied by Curci. On 37 minutes the Nerazzurri were once again close to an equaliser but Palacio’s header was just off target. At the 43-minute mark the game saw an extraordinary exchange involving two close-range crosses and a shot between Taider and Pereira – all in front of a wide-open Bologna goal – with the Nerazzurri still failing to make the most of it. An effort from Guarin struck the crossbar just before the half ended with the home side leading 1-0.
On 51 minutes Mazzarri’s side finally got on the score sheet: Guarin picked out Jonathan, whose right-footer was deflected by Sorensen into his own net. Four minutes later Handanovic went airborne to make a save on Bianchi’s spectacular volley. Another big chance fell to Guarin in the 75th minute. Then two minutes into injury time Juan Jesus nearly broke the crossbar with a thumping volley. The match between Bologna and Inter thus ended with a final score of 1-1.
