MILAN - The paths of Pietro Mennea and Inter crossed for the last time in May
2010 at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome, where a story of true sport and victory
was told. It was a story of Mennea, Olympic gold medallist in Moscow in 1980
and world record holder from 1979 to 1996 for the 200 metres, and the team that
would soon become an unparalleled leader on the pitch once again – a team
passionately supported by Mennea as well.
This morning in Rome, after a long battle with an incurable disease, the
greatest sprinter in Italian sports history left us. However, the image remains
of Mennea with his finger raised to the sky in a sign of victory – an image not
unlike one we recall of José Mourinho.
President Massimo Moratti and everyone here at Inter would like to offer our condolences to the family of Pietro Mennea, a true legend of Italian sport and a champion that will never be forgotten.
