INTER VS. JUVENTUS: THE PRESTIGE, BATTLES AND COMEBACKS

A look back at matches against the Bianconeri at San Siro, featuring unforgettable goals from Seedorf, Vieri/Toldo and Perisic

MILAN - Prestige, competitiveness and rivalry. Inter vs. Juventus is always a match which is different from the others, full of meaning with a rich history of intense and heart-pounding encounters. Matches which seem endless regardless of the result. Over the years, San Siro has been the setting for unforgettable Nerazzurri comebacks which perfectly encapsulated the desire to fight and never give up that are key aspects of the Inter DNA.

Looking back to the 1978-79 season, Bersellini’s Inter came from behind after Cuccureddu opened the scoring with Beppe Baresi and Evaristo Beccalossi the names on the scoresheet. In 1993, it took an ice-cool Ruben Sosa to make it 2-2 from the spot. After earlier beating Peruzzi from a free kick, he stepped up to convert with a perfect penalty right into the top corner via the underside of the bar to earn a point in stoppage time.

Between 2000 and 2004, there were four editions of matches between Inter and Juventus where the team showed great mentality and character. On 3 December 2000, Juventus were two goals up after just ten minutes. The response followed soon after. Laurent Blanc headed home before Di Biagio equalised with a long-range free kick in the second half. In 2002, there were two incredible draws. In March, it was Clarence Seedorf’s night as he scored two extraordinary goals. The first broke the deadlock while the second from range in the 91st minute lifted the roof at San Siro. Again in stoppage time in October of the same year, there was another stunning last-minute equaliser. Toldo had been thrown forward, he got to the ball before it went in off Christian Vieri to make it 1-1.

Again in 2004, Inter were able to come back despite being 0-2 down against Juventus with ten minutes left. First, Vieri scored on the volley before Adriano in a six-minute spell of classic Inter with relentless attacking. Finally, you can’t forget the win in September 2016. Juventus went ahead in the 67th minute before Icardi headed in and Perisic came up with the winner in a thrilling 2-1 win. History, comebacks and Inter wins.
