LECCE - At the Stadio Via del Mare in Lecce, it was ‘El Toro’ Lautaro Martinez who scored the winner in the penultimate pre-season friendly as the second International Champions Cup match of 2018 finished 1-0.
The match started at a good tempo and the French side posed more of a threat early on. In the 17th minute, Handanovic made his first great save to put Rafael’s right-foot strike from outside the box behind for a corner. In the 25th minute, Handanovic was there to keep out a Terrier header. In the 29th minute, a low Politano shot was blocked by the body of Solet in the area. In the 35th minute, Martinez controlled a long ball from Skriniar brilliantly but Gorgelin coming off his line forced him to rush the shot. The French side had two chances in the 41st minute. First, Handanovic saved from Diaz and then Maolida wasn’t able to find the target with his header from a good position. The first half ended with a Karamoh shot from the edge of the area that Gorgelin saved.
The second half began with Martinez heading over from Politano’s cross but it was just a sign of what was to come for El Toro. In the 52nd minute, Dalbert squared the ball from the left, Politano dummied it which created space for Lautaro to apply the finish at the far post. Ten minutes after going ahead, Inter had an excellent chance through Dalbert who burst into the area but his shot hit the side-netting. Despite all the changes, Inter continued to manage the game well. Lyon’s biggest chance of the second half came in the 76th minute when the substitute Gouiri fired narrowly over. The match remained lively in the final 15 minutes and in the final minute, Salcedo (brought on for Martinez) narrowly missed the target with a good right-foot strike from the edge of the area.
It finished 1-0 for Luciano Spalletti’s Inter in Lecce. There’s one friendly left before the start of Serie A TIM. On Saturday 11th August, there will be a trip to Madrid to face Atletico.
