CAGLIARI – It was the eleventh win in the season for Luciano Spalletti who looked back on Inter’s 3-1 win away against Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena in the 14th round of Serie A fixtures. “We played the game as a strong team,” he began. “At the start, we struggled with their eagerness and Icardi took a knock to the ankle which hindered our ability to apply pressure in that part of the pitch. It took some time to put things back in place but we changed the set-up for a moment and in the second half we did better, maintaining distance and we kept the ball moving with two touches. This team has a style suited to its characteristics and we want to continue along this road, but it makes sense to change things at certain times. We knew how to suffer as a great team and we were able to make the most of the right situations to score and calm things down.”
Questioned on the unwarranted criticism directed towards Antonio Candreva after the National Team’s recent failure to reach the World Cup, the Nerazzurri coach said: “Antonio must listen to us, because he is a strong player. No one here has ever criticised him. His teammates have great faith in him, both in his running and ability.” As for rotation within his midfield, Spalletti added: “We are fortunate enough to be able to count on five adaptable players, who can play either in the middle or in the trequartista role. Brozovic? He attacks the space well and he knows how to trouble the opposition if they leave gaps. Icardi? I have a strong squad and he is a player of substance and character. He often decides things.”
Lastly, Spalletti insisted that his team must keep pushing hard in Serie A: “The standings are really tight so we must not let up.”
