SPALLETTI: "THE TEAM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY INDIVIDUAL"

The boss takes stock of Inter's Asia tour following Saturday's 2-1 triumph over Chelsea at the International Champions Cup Singapore

SINGAPORE - Luciano Spalletti admitted that his team's International Champions Cup performances have helped to boost morale in the camp following their 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

The result, coupled with the recent defeat of Bayern, allowed Inter to win the three-way tournament against the English and German champions.

“It's an important win for this team because the lads had some disappointing results last season. Having to play against top-class opposition might have made them feel a little apprehensive but they showed great character and confidence so I'm delighted.

“We did really well for the first hour but then we found it harder to keep hold of the ball. Chelsea pressed us constantly and we struggled to bring the ball out of our half. Overall we played well, though Chelsea forced us onto the back foot and we occasionally gave the ball away cheaply."

On the tour in general: “I'm pleased with the professionalism and willingness my players have shown. We can improve of course. We need to maintain our balance a bit better and be more assured on the ball when in tight spots but we've had to play lots of games close together so they're somewhat excused in that sense.

“I'm very happy with how they performed regardless of the results. It's been an enjoyable tournament and a very good experience.

“Well done to the organisers in Singapore. We've all been really impressed by the beautiful venue, the comfort and the cleanliness."

The boss also replied to questions about Stevan Jovetic, Antonio Candreva and Ivan Perisic.

“Jovetic had a problem with his foot but he played very well today – not that I'm surprised by that.”

On rumours of talks for Candreva: “Definitely not. We can't replace him in that position, although sometimes the unexpected happens in the transfer market.

“Perisic is an Inter player but in any case the team is more important than any individual.”
