MILAN – Lothar Matthaus was the guest of honour at the Christmas Night Out held at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Tuesday night, as fans were treated to a journey back through the German’s career at the club.
Inter Club members and other Nerazzurri fans were able to go on a Walk About to discover some of the rarely seen areas of the stadium, including the mixed zone, dressing rooms and touchlines, before Roberto Scarpini joined Matthaus on stage to relive the latter’s four years at Inter.
"Inter is all about the fans," said Matthaus. "The club needs fans and great players in order to be successful. I remember all of the matches I played for Inter – it was only four years out of a 21-year career, but I loved every moment and played some of the best football of my life here."
As Matthaus posed for photos and signed autographs, there was a surprise appearance in the form of Nicola Berti, who proceeded to look back on some of the duo’s Nerazzurri highlights.
Later, in the Pirelli Room, the two legends got reacquainted with the silverware they won together between 1989 and 1991.
Matthaus bid a touching farewell to the Inter fans at the end of the evening: "It’s been very emotional to come back to San Siro – just like coming home. The love the fans have shown me is truly unique."
