APPIANO GENTILE – Davide Santon has urged Inter to keep fighting as they look to arrest a disappointing run of results against Southampton in the Europa League on Thursday night.
"The team simply cannot give up. We have to put everything we have into getting the win," said Santon, speaking to Sky Sport 24 after Wednesday’s pre-match press conference in Appiano Gentile.
"Southampton will come here looking for points, but we have a good side and we just need to get our confidence back."
The pressure is undoubtedly on for Inter, but Santon – one of the longest-serving members of the Nerazzurri dressing room – is used to such situations.
"Inter are a crazy team: we can pull off amazing results then end up losing matches. I’ve been lucky enough to be here for a long time and experience the highest highs, such as the Champions League win in 2010. I remember we almost got knocked out at the group stage away to Dynamo Kyiv, but we managed to get the win and went on to win the ultimate prize."
Looking back on Sunday’s frustrating defeat at home to Cagliari, Santon believes the side lost focus after taking the lead, allowing the Sardinian outfit a way back into the contest.
"I think we eased off after we went 1-0 up. We lost control of the game and Cagliari started causing us problems, but we should have scored a second or a third goal."
Last but not least, Santon had warm words for captain Mauro Icardi.
"Icardi has always stayed calm and it will be a boost to have him on the pitch tomorrow. We hope he can find the net again."
