MILAN – Gabriel Barbosa said Inter were the only club he wanted to join this summer as the Brazilian was officially unveiled as a Nerazzurri player at Auditorium Pirelli on Thursday.
Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera was there to introduce Gabigol: "This is a special day as we at Pirelli have the chance to help unveil a wonderful Brazilian talent. The last player I introduced like this was Ronaldo, who I’d like to wish a very happy 40th birthday."
Next to speak was Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio: "I promised Tronchetti Provera that we’d look for a player that could represent the dreams of the new Inter. Gabriel is a good lad who wants to work hard. Thanks to Suning and to president Erick Thohir, we were able to make it a reality."
It was then time for Gabigol to say his first words as an Inter player.
"I’m really happy – this is an incredible day. I’m delighted to be part of this club and I want to thank my family and friends. I don’t like comparing myself with other players: I’m Gabriel Barbosa. Inter have wonderful fans. I want to make history with this club.
"Inter was my first choice. It was the project and all the staff that made up my mind. I want to keep learning and do whatever’s necessary to help my team-mates. I want to try to win it all," said the striker.
Gabigol said he was confident he would adapt to his new surroundings quickly.
"It’s a big change in my life but I’ll have my friends and family here and they’ll help me. I played in the Copa America and the Olympics this summer so I’ll need a little time, but I’m young and focused on my goal. I’ve been training hard, I’m in shape and I think I’m ready for the Bologna match."
The Brazilian was keen to shy away from comparisons with some of his illustrious compatriots, but acknowledged that the Brazilian players involved in Inter’s treble success had made history.
"We’re talking about another era here, but those players were so successful. They gave everything they had on the field of play. I want to do the same – I want to give 100%. We have lots of good players here, I’m just one of them. I spoke with Coutinho and I was really pleased that Ronaldo wished me good luck."
Gabigol then went on to expand on his reasons for choosing Inter.
"I spoke with De Boer and we had a good chat. The team is playing well now and I’ll give everything I’ve got. I can play in several positions, so it’s up to the coach. My goal is to help the team. I had a big offer from China, but I decided to come here because Inter was always my first choice. There were offers from all over the world but I’ve joined the biggest team in Italy and I’m delighted with my decision.
"The fans have really impressed me. I want to promise them maximum commitment and motivation. The most important thing is that they support us. I’ve seen that the Italian league is more technical, more physical, unlike the Brazilian championship. We know there are big challenges ahead but we’re focused," he said.
Last but not least, Gabigol said a few words about his new team-mates.
"Inter is not just Icardi. He’s an idol – I’ve been following him forever and think he’s a top player. All of the players have been really friendly. They’ve made me feel very welcome and now I can’t wait to make my debut and play alongside them."
