DE BOER BEGINS REIGN WITH WIN OVER CELTIC

A goal in each half by Eder and new signing Candreva seal victory for Inter in their final pre-season friendly before Serie A gets under way

LIMERICK - Frank de Boer won his first match in the Nerazzurri dugout as Inter wrapped up their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 defeat of Celtic in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.

Eder turned in Ivan Perisic's flick-on moments before half time to hand Inter the lead, before Antonio Candreva came off the bench and produced a cheeky chipped finish to make it 2-0 in the second period.

Inter might have taken the lead as early as the third minute has it not been for an impressive goalkeeping display from young Italian Leonardo Fasan

Icardi's volleyed pass set Ivan Perisic away and the Croat's pullback found Banega on the edge of the box. The Argentine's strike was crisp but the former Udinese academy product pulled out an instinctive one-handed stop to tip it over.

Perisic tested Fasan again on 12 minutes before Ryan Christie called Samir Handanovic into action with a low drive that didn't unduly trouble the Slovene.

Midway through the half Andrea Ranocchia thought he'd scored when he met Banega's corner only to see Stefan Johansen hoof the ball clear off the line.

Stuart Armstrong was presented with a gilt-edged opportunity on the half-hour mark as he beat the offside trap and found himself one on one with Handanovic, but the Samir managed to keep the scores intact courtesy of an outstretched foot

Down the other end, Fasan denied Eder and Geoffrey Kondogbia then when Icardi finally slotted past him in the 35th minute the flag was up for offside.

The Nerazzurri got the goal their superiority deserved on the stroke of half time after Fasan had turned Banega's near-post effort behind for a corner. The Argentine took it himself, Perisic got the flick-on and Eder leapt at the far post to nod home.

Celtic began the second period with a series of corners, Ambrose heading one wide and Handanovic claiming the others.

The Scottish champions came within an inch of levelling the scores on the hour mark when a lovely one-touch move ended with Ciftci hitting the top of the post.

With 30 minutes remaining De Boer made a double substitution, bringing on Felipe Melo for Banega and Antonio Candreva for Eder.

The Italy man took barely 10 minutes to make an impact. Icardi played the ball into Candreva's path and Inter's new signing cooly chipped the keeper from 18 yards.

There was still time for a crucial defensive block from Miranda and another save from Handanovic before the ref called time on the last match of this year's International Champions Cup.

So it was a debut win for new boss Frank de Boer, who will now set about preparing the Nerazzurri for their Serie A curtain-raiser at Chievo, on Sunday 21 August at 20:45 CEST.
