ZANETTI: "ALL ABOUT GETTING CLOSE TO THE FANS"

Our vice president ahead of Wednesday's meeting with Estudiantes: "We get to see Inter fans on the other side of the world. We want to be big players next season"

MILAN – Together they won four trophies in two seasons at Inter – the early years of one of the most successful teams in history. On Wednesday 27 July, Javier Zanetti and Juan Sebastian Veron will meet again, now on opposite sides and in completely different roles.

Red Bull Arena in Harrison is the stage and Inter v Estudiantes is the occasion.

“It will be great to meet again. We had so many great times together at Inter,” Zanetti told inter.it. "He's president of Estudiantes now and I'm vice president of Inter. It will be nice to get together in America for this special match.”

Indeed, Inter playing against a team from his homeland is a particularly significant occasion for the former Argentina captain.

“There's a special connection between Inter and my country. So many Argentine players have helped make history at the club over the years. They've all left their mark and hopefully that will continue with the guys we have here now.”

Zanetti then spoke more generally about the club's summer visit to the States: "Tours like this are important because they allow you to get up close to fans who live in other parts of the world.

“In terms of preparing for the new season, it's great because going away together and playing against top opposition is the best way to bond on and off the pitch and improve your fitness.”

Zanetti ended with a word for the fans: "I have nothing but thanks for our fans. They always give us so much support regardless of the result. We want to be big players this season and to do that we'll all have to fight together."
