ICARDI: "WE NEED TO WORK HARD"

"We’ll keep trying until it’s mathematically impossible for us to finish third," said the Inter captain after the defeat to Genoa

GENOA Mauro Icardi has called for his side to pull their sleeves up and put the hard yards in as they continue to fight for third place.

"Third place is nearly gone but we’ll keep trying until it’s mathematically impossible," Icardi told Inter Channel after the game. "Fiorentina are behind us in the fight for fourth place and we need to focus so we can do some good work over the summer. We produced a good performance today apart from the result and we created lots of chances, but the ball wouldn’t go in.

"We lacked that killer instinct in front of goal. We got through many times, but we forced the play and ended up not scoring. It’s happened a lot this season – we’ve made lots of chances without finishing them off. It was the same thing when we had our dip in January and it’s hurt us again today, but that’s football.

"We came out for the second half with the aim of performing as well as we did in the first half. We gave them a chance and they scored, then we tried to battle back in the closing stages but it was too hard. I had some chances myself – I’m a striker and I need to score goals. We’re a young side and we can improve in a number of areas. We have another game in three days and we need to focus on doing well," explained the Inter captain.

Commenting on speculation linking him with a summer transfer, Icardi declared: "If offers are made they need to speak to the club. I came here to win with this club – all I need to think about is playing and doing my best for Inter."
