MILAN – Roberto Mancini was understandably disappointed with today's result, even while acknowledging that the defeat came about thanks to a couple of unlucky incidents.
Before getting to his analysis of the game, the Nerazzurri head coach offered his respects to the Maldini family after the news that Cesare Maldini had died this morning: "First of all, I'd like to pass on my condolences to Paolo's family after his father passed away.
"As for the match, I believe that we have to continue fighting and today's game was decided by isolated incidents. Nevertheless, in a situation like this when you're in control, you have to get the second goal. The season isn't over but we have to learn from our mistakes."
Evenings like this will surely act as a steep learning-curve for the Nerazzurri. "There are moments in the season when everything is going well and others when you might concede just one shot on target and lose the game."
Mancini also reserved a few words for Marco Guida's refereeing performance: "Miranda's first yellow card shouldn't have been given. The ball hit his shoulder and he was booked. Do you think it's normal to show a yellow like that to a central defender before the midway point in the first half?"
Replays seem to suggest Andrea Belotti dived to gain his side's penalty in the second half. "Your assessment of Torino's penalty is perfect. Perhaps our penalty shouldn't have been given as well, but that also led to Miranda's first booking in a classic case of Italian referees balancing out decisions."
The Inter boss also offered up some technical analysis on his team's display: "The two players on the right were completely out of position for their first goal. That simply cannot happen.
"However, I insist that we had chances to double our lead and kill off the contest. This is where we need to improve.
"Our ambition is always to do as much as we can and work as hard as we can to achieve the best result possible. We have to believe in ourselves right until the end."
Finally, some comments on what this side is lacking: "We need time to build maturity. At the start of the season we were very focused and picked up some great results. Then we went through a tough patch where we got less than we deserved."
