MILAN - Piero Ausilio got the result he wanted. In his press conference yesterday he said he would "be happy with a 1-0 win"; today Inter gave him just that.
"1-0 is all you need because it gives you three points," the sporting director stated post-match. "But we should say that it's not really a fair reflection of the game because we should have scored more. Chievo did well to fend off our attacks for nearly all of the game."
Mauro Icardi returned to the starting line-up today after sitting on the bench initially in the last game. And he capped a good all-round performance with the matchwinner.
"I knew Icardi would do well," Ausilio continued. "I said he'd start today because the coach told me he would before the news conference yesterday. I totally believe in Mauro. His numbers are very impressive given how young he still is. I'm sure he'll be in double figures before the end of the season. He's always scored goals, ever since he was a 19-year-old at Sampdoria. He's a bit below his average at the moment but I'm sure the goals he scores will be enough for his and our needs."
Are Inter still a bit short on quality in the middle of the park? "We played with two attacking midfielders today with a range of skills. Perhaps we had less possession in the last few minutes but it was just at the end of a game that by and large we controlled. We had lots of chances."
Might we start to see a more settled Inter line-up now? "We started a bit later than the others and with several new players. Apart from the last month we've always done well. Mancini has a clearer idea of what this squad can do now that he's been working with them for a few months. We have lots of quality players with different attributes but they're top-level players and they can do very well."
