MILAN – Dejan Stankovic has praised Inter striker Mauro Icardi in an appearance on Rai 2’s Domenica Sportivo on Sunday evening.
"I’m hearing transfer rumours but I can absolutely deny all that," began the Nerazzurri first team club manager. "I live and breathe Inter and spend all my time at Appiano Gentile and I can say that Mauro has got a lot of responsibility on his shoulders: he’s become the captain of a great side this year and he now represents a huge club.
"Strikers go through tough periods. I’m really pleased because Inter are top even without him scoring regularly, so imagine how we’d be doing if he was. He’s only been on the bench twice out of 15 matches – that’s part of the game. He’s a great professional and seems very calm. He’s working hard and sooner or later he’ll get back to scoring," declared Stankovic.
Stankovic was asked what Roberto Mancini said to the team after the defeat against Napoli: "It was very hard to lose against a direct opponent, but he reassured the lads and stressed how they had shown they are a great side that can fight to achieve big things."
Last but not least, Stankovic said a few words on Inter’s January transfer plans: "We had a great summer. Piero Ausilio, Roberto Mancini and the whole club did a very good job. So I think for now we’re fine as we are."
