MANCINI: "A FANTASTIC GAME"

"We played with great intensity. All the lads did magnificently." The boss reflects on Inter's win over Roma

MILAN - Roberto Mancini had nothing but praise for his team after a second consecutive win saw Inter move back to the top of the league tonight.

The manager was keen to point out the contribution made by each of his players in achieving a 1-0 victory over Roma.

The first question was about his reaction at the final whistle: "No, they weren't tears of joy. It wasn't me getting emotional! My eyes were just a bit sore and tired."

Moving onto the game itself, the Nerazzurri boss declared: "All the lads played magnificently. We closed down the spaces to keep out the fabulous players Roma have and created lots of chances ourselves. It was a fantastic game played with great intensity. There were just a couple of counter-attacks we should have done better with."

On Inter's rearguard – Serie A's meanest defence: "Yes, it's important not to concede. If you want to build a strong house you have to start from the foundations. And in really tight games like tonight's 1-0 is just fine."

He was also quizzed about his starting XI, which saw Icardi left out. "It was a technical choice. We didn't want to give Roma any reference points up front. What Mauro said in Bologna has nothing to do with it. He didn't say anything bad anyway.

"Nagatomo and D'Ambrosio? We needed two strong, pacy players on the flanks who could defend and get forward themselves. I'm pleased because they both did brilliantly. I had to take Danilo off towards the end because he hadn't played for ages and got cramp but I'm delighted for him. He deserves it."

Handanovic produced the goods once again with some key saves. Mancini commented: "He did his job tonight, as he did in Bologna. He did what you expect a top keeper like him to do.

"Is Medel underrated? We think he's a fantastic player. He can play in lots of positions, he's smart and has good technique.

"Ljajic did really well and worked his socks off."

Finally, on Inter's lofty position: "We're delighted but it's only the 11th game. It's going to be a long, hard season for all of us."
