JOVETIC BRACE HANDS INTER 1-2 WIN

The Nerazzurri made it two wins from two this season as they defeated Carpi 1-2 at the Stadio Braglia

MODENA – Inter continued their excellent start to the season this evening with a 1-2 win over Carpi at the Stadio Braglia in Modena.

The Nerazzurri lined up with Handanovic in goal behind a back four of Santon, Murillo, Miranda and Juan Jesus. Guarin, Medel and Kondogbia formed a three-man midfield behind trequartista Brozovic and a striking duo of Jovetic and Palacio.

Carpi were roared out of the blocks by the raucous fans at the Braglia, but it was the Nerazzurri who dominated the early possession. Fabrizio Castori had opted for a five-man defence after their 5-2 opening day defeat to Sampdoria, and the new-look back-line kept the Inter attack quiet for much of the first half hour.

The match changed on 31 minutes, however, as Guarin picked out Jovetic at the back post. The No. 10 controlled well and stabbed past Brkic at the second time of asking to give the Nerazzurri a deserved 0-1 lead.

The goal seemed to spark Carpi into life, with the Biancorossi very nearly delivering an immediate riposte. Matos found himself one-on-one with Handanovic and looked certain to score, but the Slovenian pulled off a great save to maintain the Nerazzurri advantage at the break.

The second half kicked off with a gilt-edged chance for Inter to extend their lead. Juan Jesus showed great tenacity to burst down the left, win back a loose ball and find Palacio. The Argentine took up the baton, evading the Carpi lines and teeing up Brozovic, whose shot was just off target. Palacio looked threatening again moments later, fizzing a shot past the far post from the right-hand side of the area.

Inter were camped out in the Carpi half, with full-backs Santon and Juan Jesus posing a constant headache for the hosts. Yet there was to be a sting in the tail for Mancini’s side as a poor touch from Lasagna inadvertently set up Di Gaudio in the Inter box, with the Carpi man’s deflected shot trickling past Handanovic and into the net on 81 minutes.

It was a cruel blow for the Nerazzurri but there was no time to waste. Palacio had a great chance to win it in the 86th minute, but the Argentine couldn’t find a way past Brkic. With the pressure mounting, Guarin gathered the ball and drove into the area, cutting back inside only to be felled by Lasagna for a penalty kick. Jovetic made no mistake from the spot to send Inter home with another three points in the bag.
