APPIANO GENTILE – Davide Santon looked back on his teenage years at Inter, the last four months since he rejoined the club and his hopes for the future in an interview with Sky Sport Italia today.
He began by comparing the Davide of then with the Davide of now; the boy who came through the Nerazzurri youth ranks moving abroad aged 20, and the man who returned from England three and a half years later. "I've grown so much and in lots of ways. I was 18 when I made my Inter debut. This is where I learnt to eat properly and to respect times, basically where I became a man," he explained.
"I've always been myself and always done what I wanted to do, although obviously we need to be careful about what we do nowadays. But ever since I was a young child, I always respected the rules."
The Italian left-back went on: "On a personal level, I'd say this second spell at the club has been good so far, even though I haven't been playing as much recently as I did when I joined in January. I'm glad I came back though. This is a club with a future. There are plans here. Now we need to finish the year on a positive note in front of our fans."
Santon immediately barged his way into the side after signing at the end of the transfer window but has found himself further down the pecking order of late. "I ran into a few physical problems after 13 games and had to sit out for a bit but then I got myself fit again. The gaffer has decided to go with other choices for now but when I get my chance I have to show what I can do.
"The gaffer only came in himself six months ago and we've been a bit unlucky with some of our results. But there's a future and a project here. The coach knows that and we know that."
Could Yaya Toure be part of Inter's future? "He's one of those players who can take you up to the next level, but it obviously depends on lots of different factors. It would be great if he did join; if he doesn't then we'll move forward all the same.
"In any case we need to raise our overall game, not just physically but mentally too. I'd ask the fans to stick by us and keep believing in us. We have a very young squad and some of the lads haven't been here long. The first year is always difficult. The reward will come next year and hopefully we can give our fans a lot to cheer about."
