APPIANO GENTILE - Inter will leave no stone unturned in their attempts to clinch a Europa League spot this season but aim to be a competitive force next year regardless of European qualification, Roberto Mancini declared confidently in his news conference today.
The manager also believes the recent Financial Fair Play settlement agreed with UEFA will have little bearing on the club's plans to construct a successful side and says European football's governing body recognises that Inter are striving to comply with FFP regulations.
These were some of the topics touched on by the coach as he chatted to journalists in a media conference today to preview tomorrow's vital meeting with Lazio.
He began by discussing the match itself: "There's still one thing about my line-up that I need to make a decision on, but in any case all the lads must be ready, even if they start on the bench. They can all have a part to play in these last few games."
On playing away from home and the threat posed by Stefano Pioli's in-form side: "From a tactical point of view it may be easier for us to play away against a team that tries to play an open game. But nothing beats playing at the San Siro in front of our fans.
"Lazio are a big test for us. They're having a fantastic season and they'll take the battle for second place with Roma down to the wire.
"As for us, we'll do everything we can to get into the Europa League. There are 12 points left to play for but even if we don't qualify it won't change our future. Inter remain a big club and next season we'll be challenging at the top. We're making progress and we'll keep making fewer mistakes."
Asked about Financial Fair Play, Mancini said: "UEFA understand that Inter are doing things the right way. I don't think the settlement agreement will change our transfer plans. We want to build a great team that can get into the Champions League and win things."
That was the cue for a series of questions about possible summer signings.
"I haven't spoken to Toure. He's a Manchester City player and obviously we're not the only ones interested in him," he continued.
"The same goes for Dybala: he's a great striker and everyone wants him.
"Thiago Motta helped write Inter history but he belongs to Paris Saint-Germain and I don't think he's a free agent."
Finally, the coach spoke about the form of some of his own players. "Vidic is an experienced hand and he's been playing well of late. His fitness has improved too, adding to his experience and quality.
"Shaqiri isn't playing at the moment for the simple reason that Hernanes is performing really well and deserves to start. Xherdan got off to a good start with us, then his fitness levels dropped off a bit due to the 25 days he went without playing at Bayern Munich. He just needs time to settle in and get back into top shape again."
