MANCINI: "THE LADS DID WELL AND GAVE EVERYTHING"

The Nerazzurri boss spoke to the press after his side’s 0-0 draw with AC Milan in the derby

MILAN – The tens of thousands at San Siro tonight saw a high-octane Inter performance and mightily encouraging second half, with Nerazzurri boss Roberto Mancini proud of his side’s display: "I take consolation from the way we played for 70 minutes of tonight’s match. We did well and tried to win. AC Milan defended well and were lucky at times. I’m pleased with the lads, they gave everything."

The match was not without its controversy, of course, and Mancini was clear in his opinions of the penalty call: "It was a definite penalty. Last Sunday the referee saw it perfectly with Guarin, tonight less so. It was a clear penalty. There needs to be consistency in the refereeing. I’ve said nothing for 20 games but I think I can say it tonight."

In truth, AC Milan only really troubled Inter for a short spell in the first half: "We got into difficulty because we dropped back a bit and suffered on the flanks," explained Mancini.

There was time for a word on young Mateo Kovacic: "I think Kovacic played well. Being young I think he needs to learn more about timing the play. He’s an inside forward but can play anywhere because he has great quality. He needs to grow through matches and hard work."

Taking a more general tone, Mancini finished up by speaking about his tenure as coach so far: "A coach can make mistakes when he takes on a side in November. I thought we’d have seven or eight points more than we do and I think with a bit more luck things could have gone better. We could have got more from some games."
