MILAN – Sporting director Piero Ausilio spoke about the club's present and future and the importance of Roberto Mancini in both when he was hosted on Sky Football Night.
He began by responding to questions about some of the many big names linked with a move to Inter for next season. "For now they are just dreams. It's good to have dreams but we're trying to lay the groundwork for a serious, great future. We want to build something that becomes real."
To do so, the role of a coach such as Roberto Mancini is crucial: "Roberto is a charismatic, credible figure. He's been successful everywhere he's been and is internationally recognised, which obviously helps."
Then came the usual question about Yaya Toure: "It's understandable that he might want to test himself in a different country but he's a Manchester City player, they're a massive club and don't want to lose a player like him.
"Our transfer business will be self-financed. We'll sell to buy," Ausilio explained. "We could raise funds through specific deals such as the one we set up for Federico Bonazzoli. We have an arrangement with the Sampdoria president whereby we hold an option to buy him back and not lose him. I started out in the youth academy and I'm fond of all our youngsters. I'd love to see them grow and establish themselves in the first team but it's not always possible."
The next subject brought up was the contract renewals of Samir Handanovic and Mauro Icardi. "We've offered an extension with improved terms to both, but every renewal is different and takes time because there are lots of things to sort out. We're in regular contact with their agents and when there's a clear desire there everything gets sorted out in the end. We want to keep both of them. The same goes for Kovacic."
The Nerazzurri sporting director ended by discussing the significance of Sunday's derby: "A win can give you a real lift, help to end the season on a high and give you a platform for next term. It's not true that it doesn't count for anything. Winning a game like that provides the players with the chance to grow and work in a better environment."
