ZANETTI: "WE WANT TO PUT IN A BIG PERFORMANCE"

The Nerazzurri vice president spoke ahead of the UEFA Europa League round-of-16 first leg between Wolfsburg and Inter

WOLFSBURG – Inter vice president Javier Zanetti spoke to the media shortly before tonight’s Europa League clash at the Volkswagen Arena: "This is a wonderful stadium and there’s a great atmosphere around the place. We face a team that are doing excellently in the Bundesliga and are very dangerous up front, but we’ll try to put in a big performance and cause them some problems.

"It’s definitely going to help us understand where we’re at in terms of our progression. The lads have worked really hard under the coach. We want to show character and try to get a positive result here," declared Zanetti.

Asked how far Inter are away from being a top side, Zanetti replied: "Not far, we hope. We’ve embarked on a new journey to build a group that can challenge. Of course, there are always going to be blips along the way, but we’re all pulling together in the same direction. We need to be consistent."

Zanetti was then asked about leading scorer Mauro Icardi: "No Argentina call-up from Martino? It’s good in that he’ll stay in Milan instead, but a call-up would’ve been important for Mauro. I’m sure he’ll have the chance to play for Argentina in the future. Contract renewal? We’re very close and hope to make an announcement as soon as possible."
