MILAN – The members of La Grande Inter side are indelibly etched into the memories of Nerazzurri fans, young and old. And Aristide Guarneri, one of the most successful defenders of all time, is certainly remembered as an integral part of Helenio Herrera’s legendary team.
A colossus in the Nerazzurri defence for no less than ten seasons, he and Armando Picchi formed the foundations of a team that reached the summit of world football, winning three Scudetti, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups. Guarneri also tasted international glory, winning the European Championships with Italy in 1968.
“I was a good player, but I was fortunate too,” says Guarneri, with excessive modesty. In truth, he was a wonderful player, a formidable athlete unbeatable in the area and blessed with an uncanny ability to read the game long before his opponents.
