MANCINI: "I BELIEVE IN WHAT WE'RE DOING"

The boss held a press conference ahead of Inter v Palermo: "We have to keep knuckling down, that's how you improve. We're turning into a real team"

APPIANO GENTILE - Inter return to the San Siro tomorrow looking to get back on track in front of their fans and Roberto Mancini met with the media today to discuss his side's next obstacle – Palermo.

The first question put to him was about how the fans are feeling: how can you instil optimism in them? "The fans have to trust me, that's all there is to it. It's crucial that we start stringing some results together though. The crowd cheer when you win and are sad when you lose – that's perfectly normal. And just as you accept one result you have to accept the other result too. A bit of balance is needed: you mustn't get too carried away when you win or too depressed when you lose."

The manager was then asked if he sees Brozovic and Kovacic playing together. "I don't think there would be any problems there. They know each other, speak the same language and play together for Croatia. Mateo is more of an attacking midfielder but with time I think they could do a job together in the middle of the park."

What did the coach make of George Puscas on his full debut against Napoli? "He did really well, playing with great intensity in front of a big crowd. I think he'll get lots of chances in future. As for tomorrow, we'll see whether to change anything around."

Quizzed on who might start against Palermo, he added: "Podolski and Palacio rested midweek so they're quite fresh. Campagnaro is better and he could play tomorrow."

The next topic was the team's formation. "I don't think there's much difference between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. We changed in Naples because we thought the team would be more balanced set up that way; it wasn't because of our opponents. If we have the right approach, an attacking mentality, and if we defend with ten men then I think we can quite easily play with either system. We do need to play better though. If we score a goal it's a boost for the defence. First and foremost we really must improve our scoring record."

Mancini also looked back on the injury-time goal conceded against Napoli and had this to say about captain Andrea Ranocchia: "It's never about just one player making a mistake. When things go wrong they go wrong for everyone and when they go well they go well for everyone. It's never one person's fault alone. You win and lose together. I think the fans will be supportive of Ranocchia."

The route to success is to keep working hard: "We have to keep knuckling down, that's the only way to improve things. That's what I've told the players. There was a strange situation when I came in: I'd been here before and won titles but then that period ends and if things aren't going well and aren't getting better the fans get angry with everyone, myself included. That's to be expected. If you're a hammer, you have to know how to hit; if you're an anvil, you have to remain strong in times like this. If you have a project, you have to believe in it no matter what, especially when you go through tough moments. I believe in what we're doing here. It will take a bit of time and suffering but when success comes it will feel even better."

Finally, on tomorrow's opponents Palermo: "Tomorrow is the ideal match for us to run up against problems but it depends entirely on us. We'll need to play a perfect game if we want to win. Something has got to change but I get the impression we're turning into a real team."
