FLORENCE – It was a day of celebrations at the Cerreti complex for the 13th Niccolò Galli Memorial Tournament. Inter’s Esordienti side took first place in the competition with a 2-0 win over Parma and were able to celebrate alongside honorary president Massimo Moratti, who had received a special prize for "Una Vita per lo Sport" [A Life in Sport].
On the sidelines of the award ceremony, the honorary president fielded questions from the journalists in attendance. Asked about the possibility of owning Inter again, he replied: "It's better if I don't because if that were to happen it would mean things had gone pear-shaped. The fans are always very kind to me, they thank me for the joy they were able to feel in the past but I think they're looking forward and it's only right that they should. I think Thohir and his team are well equipped to be successful."
Have you spoken to him today? Did he ask you anything about 'making Inter healthy'? "Yes, we spoke this morning, but we didn't even mention what I said yesterday because there are other more important problems to deal with. We have a mutual liking for each other which means we don't get shocked by anything that might just be some side controversy."
What about the Nerazzurri senators and criticism from some quarters of the renewals handed out to them after the Treble? "Inter weren't held prisoner by a sense of gratitude towards the Treble winners because they were players who showed just how good they were - this year too they were among the best performers. But times change and it's normal that - like with other team-mates of theirs in the past - they should move on. Some of them might have been able to carry on doing well at Inter but it depends on what sort of plans you have. These are all opinions that you might share at the bar, and that's all I'm doing, just giving mine as if I were standing at a bar."
Cambiasso to Fiorentina? "I’d recommend him to any club."
Ranocchia as captain? "Yes, I’d really like that. I also hope he goes to the World Cup."
The Italian national team? "I’ll certainly follow the Azzurri, as I’ve always supported them passionately. Prandelli is a sensible man so let’s hope he manages to assemble a good group that might be underestimated at the beginning, but will then show its character. You need character because it’s what allows you to do good things."
Giulini and Cagliari? "I’ve heard about that, yes. I hope it’s true, provided that Cellino wants to leave. But I don’t know anything more about it."
