NEW YORK - "I would like to thank Ambassador Cardi for having taken Inter Campus as an example of development and peace in the world, on the occasion of the historic meeting between the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and President of the IOC Thomas Bach. I am very happy that Inter Campus has again been recognised for the work it does throughout the world."
This was how Massimo Moratti thanked Sebastiano Cardi, Italian Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, as the first Memorandum of Understanding between the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was signed: a step that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon defined as "historic but also logical after years of collaboration".
IOC President Thomas Bach then borrowed the words of former South Africa President Nelson Mandela: "He was right when he said that sport can change the world, but to do so we need partnerships with other actors in civil society, governments and associations." Bach then underlined the fact that "sport builds bridges, it doesn't put up barriers."
Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi then stated that "sport's power is without limit. It's a fundamental tool in promoting human rights, gender equality and global solidarity". Italy is strongly committed to promoting dialogue through a number of projects of sporting development all over the world: among these is Inter Campus, which aims to use the game of football as an educational tool to restore the right to play to 10,000 children in need.
