MADRID – The Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid was the setting for the presentation of a prestigious meeting between Inter and Real Madrid this morning.
The stage for Inter's third European Cup/Champions League triumph, and also the stadium where the Nerazzurri won the Intercontinental Cup in September 1964, beating Independiente in a playoff, was the location for the press conference to present the exhibition match between Inter and Real Madrid legends on Sunday 8 June. Club presidents Erick Thohir and Florentino Perez were accompanied by two groups of respective former players: Francesco Toldo, Ivan Cordoba and Nicola Berti for Inter Forever, and Emilio Butragueno, Fernando Hierro, Santiago Solari and Fernando Morientes for Real Madrid Foundation's CCM 2014 project.
President Thohir explained that he was, "proud to be here alongside president Florentino Perez and these fantastic players who have written history at two legendary clubs such as Inter and Real Madrid. And I'm even happier to be here with Inter Forever, this group of ex-Nerazzurri stars who put themselves at the service of the club after hanging up their boots and fly the Nerazzurri colours around the world – colours they wear on their skin and carry in their hearts.
"Inter Forever came about from an idea that Giacinto Facchetti had: he would have loved to create a bridge between Nerazzurri players of the past and the present-day team. I have the honour of being the president under whom this project is now getting off the ground, a project that a lot of people are putting a lot of work into: all the former players, the Inter Clubs, the commercial department, the social sector and the communications area."
In the morning, before the press conference, the Inter delegation visited the Spanish club's training ground, the Ciudad Real Madrid in Valdebebas park. After the conference, the two clubs' representatives had lunch together at the Santiago Bernabeu.
