MAZZARRI: "CLOSE TO MY SORT OF FOOTBALL"

"When we're on our game we start playing the kind of football I want to see: our widemen get forward a lot and the others move the ball around well"

FLORENCE - Walter Mazzarri took questions from journalists at the Stadio Franchi after Inter's 2-1 win over Fiorentina.

This is what he said: "We played well tonight but we almost threw away two points by conceding an equaliser at the end. We're still too wasteful and you can't afford that against a side like Fiorentina. There are certain things we still need to improve on.

"When we're on our game we start playing the sort of football I want to see: our widemen get forward a lot and the others move the ball around well."

"Will Icardi start the next game now? You saw what happened: he scored a goal and then almost stopped running. That's the level of fitness he's at right now. He's a very talented player but he needs to improve physically.

"Sometimes we do such senseless things. We were in the lead and from a set piece in attack we almost conceded on the break... On two or three corners we could have cleared it low but instead we kept trying to play it about. That's the sort of mistake we need to learn from. Just because you're playing well doesn't mean you can gift the opposition chances. If we'd made better use of the opportunities we had in the first half we could have won by a bigger margin. I thought we were excellent in the first period, especially considering the side we were up against and the stadium we were playing at. Away to Fiorentina you can't expect to win if you don't create chances. I would have liked to score earlier tonight but we'll take it anyway.

"Guarin? In the second period he forgot he was supposed to defend at times but he excelled in the first half, as they all did. He just needs to perform consistently over the 90 minutes. It will be great if he can do that. There aren't many players like him around.

"Icardi's goal was offside? I said five or six games ago that I wouldn't comment on the refereeing anymore.

"Hernanes is a player who knows how to deal with pressure and that's what we needed. He's the guy who can step up and take the reins of the team, do something important like take a corner just the way you want. When we lost our sharpness earlier in the season we started dropping points, especially at home like against Chievo and Catania. If we'd had a player like him, he might have been able to win it for us in a moment - take Samuel's goal against Sassuolo for example. He's got the composure and class to make those around him play well too.

"Losing to Juve is something that can happen. We were missing lots of players and we have to grow. Targets? No, we're taking things one game at a time."
