SILAO - It is now two years since an Inter Campus centre opened in Silao, in the Free and Sovereign State of Guanajuato, Mexico. Now, thanks to the support of Pirelli and local authorities, an 11-a-side football pitch has been created where kids from the poorest neighbourhoods can pull on the Nerazzurri colours, play, have fun and grow together. Initially created as a sporting youth club, it is now an important centre for hundreds of families.
The Inter Campus team, made up of project manager Christian Valero and coaches Juri Monzani and Gabriele Raspelli, travelled to Silao to consolidate the excellent work of local Inter Campus partner, the Peter Pan Foundation.
It's the foundation that looks after the everyday running of the sporting and educational activities held all year round by a staff of five educator-coaches to encourage greater school attendance from the children.
During this third visit of the season, the team checked the progress of the project and ran a coaching course for 15 educator-coaches hailing from the various Inter Campus sites in Mexico.
There were three full days' work, during which everyone paid careful attention, actively taking part in the morning and afternoon lessons. First they studied theory in the classroom to introduce the subject matter, before practical work to develop the content on the field with all 120 children from the project.
The three-day visit to Silao came to a close with a fun tournament and party, before the team headed on to Queretaro where the Inter Campus project there was celebrating its 12th birthday. There waiting for us, as ever, were the tireless Sisters of St. Marcellina, a local Inter Campus partner, and around a hundred kids from the Bolaños and Unidad Nacional neighbourhoods.
