UDINE - Inter were eliminated from the Coppa Italia this evening at the Stadio Friuli, when Maicosuel’s first-half goal decided the clash for Udinese. The evening was not short of refereeing controversy either, and two penalties were denied to the Nerazzurri.
For this round of 16 Coppa Italia match against Udinese Mazzarri opted to rotate his squad: Carrizo started in goal; Andreolli, Samuel and Campagnaro lined up in a 3-man defence; Zanetti and Nagatomo worked the flanks in midfield with Guarin, Mudingayi and Kuzmanovic in the centre; and Kovacic supported Milito in attack.
The hosts carved out the first chance on 8 minutes through Nico Lopez, as Guidolin's team continued to apply pressure thanks to Badu and Maicosuel as well. In the 32nd minute Udinese took the lead when Maicosuel bundled in a low cross from Nico Lopez. Inter fought back five minutes later as Kuzmanovic hit the crossbar. A minute later the Nerazzurri had a legitimate complaint when they were denied yet another penalty; Milito was clearly hauled back by Domizzi in the box, but the referee chose not to whistle the foul.
Palacio came on after the break in an attempt to add more firepower. However, the first big chance of the half fell to the hosts; on 54 minutes a counterattack saw Maicosuel skip past Carrizo – out of his box – before crossing to Pinzi who sent his volley high. Only seconds later the Nerazzurri were once again, incredibly, denied a penalty when Widmer clearly handled the ball in the box.
Later Palacio was flagged on an attack for a non-existent offside infraction. In the 81st minute Ruben Botta made his Nerazzurri debut after being registered by the club only yesterday. A big chance fell to Guarin on 88 minutes, then shortly afterward it was Nagatomo’s turn. But to no avail. The Nerazzurri were eliminated from the Coppa Italia.
