MAZZARRI: "THE TEAM NEEDS AN IDENTITY AND A SPIRIT"

"We've seen them on the pitch and we're glad they've been recognised. Campagnaro? The facts are there for all to see"

APPIANO GENTILE - "I'm happy that Livorno are having the season they are, they're an important part of my past, I've got ties to them," said Walter Mazzarri as he looked ahead to tomorrow evening's match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (kick-off 20:45).

"I'm proud to have started from scratch, to have had the career I have, without any friendships that helped me along the way," said the Nerazzurri coach, beginning with his time at Livorno. "As a coach I focus on my players, the team and the pitch. What's changed compared with the past, now I'm at Inter? The interest changes, but I don't think about that, I think about how to motivate my players and what happens on the pitch. That's it."

A number of Livorno players are set to line up against their parent club tomorrow: "We keep tabs on all of Inter's players on loan at Livorno because they're exciting players: Bardi, Mbaye, Duncan and Benassi are important players who are doing well, and I hope they can do well and help out Inter in the future."

Mazzarri was then asked to comment on the Hugo Campagnaro situation: "I look at the facts, the club pointed out that certain things were said that weren't true. Having said that, we're not bothered about the rest and I don't want to comment on it. Everyone will potentially have the chance to see what's gone on, I don't want to talk about it. I'm a coach - if a player is not available and when I ask the relevant people how he is and they tell me he's still feeling this or he can't do that - and I try to replicate in training what we might face on a Sunday: if he hasn't trained with us that means he's not ready physically. The rest is not down to me, us or Inter. I think the club behaved correctly, we talk, we're keeping an eye on him, we had to produce that club statement because we heard things said that weren't true. That happened, that's what we thought, then we decided to come out with the statement."

The coach was then asked if he was pleased to have heard Erick Thohir's compliments: "Of course, very much so. I was also happy when he spoke about our play, if you want to progress and win in the shortest possible timeframe, you need to give the team a spirit and an identity. We're pleased that the majority shareholder has recognised that, just as we've seen it on the pitch. What will I say to him when we meet? I'll very calmly tell him what I think. I'll give him my opinion. The owners know we can't disregard the budget and I know that too, I'm used to it. When people talk about a player to buy in a certain position, I'm used to coming up with a list of eight names and often in the past they've got me the eighth, I understand that. Then I try to get the best out of the players who I have to work with."
