APPIANO GENTILE – During the press conference on the eve of the Hellas Verona clash, Walter Mazzarri also commented on statements from Erick Thohir, who had complimented the coach: "I’m happy when an investor says something like that because he understands I have a certain philosophy. In Italy we focus a lot on the result without looking at the context, which is a bad thing. Outside of this country you don’t find the same culture. If we can get away from this mentality then our club will do great things."
Regarding the status of Walter Samuel, Mazzarri explained: "He’s fine and ready to come back. In the defence we only have five players, and there are three games within a week, so tomorrow’s choices will depend on what I want to do in Bergamo. Samuel is a guarantee. Perhaps he’ll lack a bit of rhythm, but he’s ready to start."
Next, the coach discussed another defender, Hugo Campagnaro: "I’m no surgeon, so I can’t say how long it will take for him to come back. The doctor has the data and knows how many days are needed. At that point we’ll focus on getting him back. But there’s no way I have of knowing. I don’t even know if we’ll have him back in time for the game in Udine. And if he were to play as he did with Argentina then he’d be of no use to us. He needs to be firing on all cylinders again like at the beginning of the season. Once he’s healthy I’ll be able to tell you more."
The discussion shifted from defence to attack, and on the possibility that Belfodil may have gained ground on Icardi: "Icardi still doesn’t have ninety minutes in him. He’s not completely healthy. As for Belfodil, he also has to learn the team’s movements. Then he’ll be able to cover more roles, provided he understands the need to be more careful from a tactical standpoint."
