MILAN - The first edition of the tournament in memory of Arpad Weisz was held yesterday afternoon at the Arena Civica Gianni Brera. Hungarian Jew Weisz was a great player and coach in the 1930s until his career was cut short by the advent of Nazism and he was deported to Auschwitz.
Through this tournament, the city of Milan – the first in Italy – not only wanted to pay tribute to an extraordinary figure, but also send out a strong message against racism, xenophobia and discrimination, with the aim of teaching youngsters the importance of respecting their opponents.
There were some key figures from the world of football in the stands: Mario Corso was there on behalf of Inter, and he was joined by representatives from Bologna, AC Milan, Lega Calcio, the FIGC, AIC, AIAC, Coni, the local minister for education, and the general consul for Hungary in Milan.
Three teams competed in the tournament: the Allievi from Inter, AC Milan and Bologna. The Nerazzurri won their first match 2-0 against Bologna but – despite a good performance – succumbed 3-0 to the Rossoneri in the final and finished in second place.
Below are the results of the competition:
AC Milan 2-0 Bologna.
