APPIANO GENTILE – Walter Mazzarri began his press conference today by talking about the transition from last weekend's match against Sassuolo to tomorrow's game with Fiorentina. "I've always thought that you need to learn from the positives both when you win and when you lose so that you can do things even better in the next game. We'll try to do that against Fiorentina tomorrow, following on from our victory at Sassuolo."
He went on: "It will be another step in our process of growth because Fiorentina are a different team to all the others we've played up until now. It will be another test for us. Montella's team give you few reference points. It might seem counter-intuitive but without Gomez it's perhaps even tougher to get at them: they keep the ball on the ground and try to boss possession. It's going to be a big test for us."
Mazzarri was then asked if Diego Milito might start the game: "We still have another training session tomorrow so we'll see. But Diego hasn't got 90 minutes in him yet and you mustn't rush these things. He needs to be eased back in slowly."
So is the coach planning to rotate his side at all? "As things stand, the eleven who have been starting games are the best options available. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! When a coach has a clearly defined tactical set-up that he's refined over the years, and when he has to introduce that to a new group of players, once he's got everything working well with the starting eleven it's best to change things around as little as possible.
"Assess Inter's targets after these first few games? We can weigh things up - partially at least - only once we reach the midway stage of the season."
In response to a question about Mateo Kovacic: "We have a big squad and that's the way of the modern game, but players are important even when they only play a portion of the match. Just because a player doesn't start doesn't mean he's not good! And of course Mateo's spell on the sidelines set him back a bit. Players of his quality will always find space."
Mazzarri was also asked for a comment on Giuseppe Rossi: "He's a player I've always liked and always wanted to have. They made a smart move investing in him. I think he's world-class."
