SERIE A, CATANIA 0-3 INTER

Palacio opens the scoring, then Nagatomo and Alvarez follow as the Nerazzurri keep a clean sheet at the Stadio Massimino

CATANIA – The second league match of the season and the second victory (the third if you count the Coppa Italia). Walter Mazzarri’s Inter won again and did it by keeping a clean sheet. Finding the net were Palacio, Nagatomo and Alvarez.

But let’s start from the beginning. To take on Catania at their home stadium, Mazzarri chose Handanovic in goal behind a 3-man defence of Campagnaro, Ranocchia and Juan Jesus. In midfield, Jonathan and Nagatomo worked the flanks with Kovacic, Cambiasso and Guarin positioned in the middle. Palacio was played in attack with Alvarez supporting him.

Catania started aggressively although Inter responded well through Jonathan and then later Alvarez. Palacio put the Nerazzurri ahead on 19 minutes when he connected with Jonathan’s low cross from close range after the Brazilian had blown past his marker. And thus the first half ended with Inter in the lead, although Spolli risked a red card in injury time for a rough foul on Palacio.

Inter were assertive when the second half began and in the 49th minute could have had a penalty for contact between Alvarez and Palacio in the Catania box. However, seven minutes later Inter doubled their lead when Nagatomo headed in Palacio’s precise cross at the far post. On 78 minutes Belfodil put the ball in the net, only to see his goal ruled out for offside. Then two minutes later the third goal arrived as Alvarez surged into the box and finished with an inch-perfect diagonal shot. The game thus ended with Inter securing a 0-3 victory at Catania, ensuring their winning start to the season continues.
