MAZZARRI: "A FOURTH SUB, WHY NOT?"

Mazzarri explained, "In football nowadays with such big benches, it wouldn't be a bad idea. It would also help track players who feature less"

APPIANO GENTILE - Walter Mazzarri discussed a lot of footballing issues earlier as he addressed the media before Catania v Inter tomorrow. The coach touched on a number of subjects, from the Nerazzurri's opponents tomorrow, and the approach his side need to adopt, to his footballing philosophy, before finishing with a new idea that he considers interesting: a fourth substitution.

"I always bring on three players, you need to, if I could I'd use a fourth! With football nowadays and such big squads, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Two years ago I was an advocate of increasing the number of players on the bench. Why not add another substitution? It would also help you to keep tabs on players who feature less," explained the coach.

"I like meeting people, the fans, and they say to me 'we're starting again from scratch this year', but I don't know how far off the other sides we are. In football you take things one day at a time, you always need to think like that, nothing else other than performing your best in the next game, and that's what we say with the president too. There was a great atmosphere at the San Siro, that's good to see. We're not bothered about what the other teams say, we're just focused on our own path. I'm sure we'll achieve success. I'd like to just stress that when I say 'one day at a time' I don't mean 'take what comes' but try to give everything in all our matches, perform well at both ends of the park, and to give it our all.

"Ideally I'd like to have the ball for 90 minutes and attack the whole time, but then we'd need to see what impact this has on the team overall. If our quality is for the good of the team, you put as much of it on show as possible. We'll see from one match to the next. Essentially I'd like us to take the game to our opponents, but I need to see if this gets results. These are all things I need to consider carefully."

Finally a question on pre-match routines: When we play at home will training and the press conference be held at the San Siro? "We'll see. We've done that twice because we weren't used to the new pitch. I don't think so, unless the pitch is relaid again. If need be we'll gladly do it, we'll see on a game by game basis."
